Let’s work somewhere else

Once upon a time, at the end of my studies I decided that I wanted to live great experiences before being to old or too engaged. I wanted to move abroad to discover new people, culture and places. Now I’m in Paris and being happy of it. Some of my personal goals are achieved and that makes me really happy.

But if I have to go back in Switzerland now I’ll contact these guys. If it still Switzerland it’s the German side of it and I’m pretty sure that living other there could make you feeling you are in an other country.

I did (or we did) an interview in Zürich for Students and I was really excited about that. It’s just completely new regarding where I grew up.

I did other tries in Spain or Ireland that didn’t match. It just toke me much more time to realize what I really wanted and which is my place.

Liip are looking for talents in several domains. If one of them fits your skills and your job is boring your mind out, try, at least. They worked on the very (very) promising local.ch. Everyone knows that geolocalization is a key feature for the future in the internet field or is the future of web applications.

You’ve got four chances to play to the Wii during work because they are looking for:

an PHP/XSLT Developer: Liip contains some XSL and PHP gurus,
a JavaScript Developer: the language everybody should know definitively,
some Web Dev Interns you sure have a lot to learn from these keen guys
and last but not least a Java/Flash Developer: ActionScript and JavaScript are cousin, brother and Java is such a PITA but you can love it if you want.

Personally I found my current job on a blog, and the past one because of a comment I let on a blog. Both of these company are hiring by the way:

Yahoo! a very nice place to work with passionate people,
and Électron Libre (if you prefer the french area of Switzerland and the buzz).

You can change your life now and it’s damn simple. It did it because it was what I deeply wanted. I have no regrets and will push everyone I can to do the same because the opportunities of being part of a big challenge don’t knock at your door everyday. Liip and the guys or companies around them rocks, give them a try.

À la fin de mes études ma seule envie était de quitter ma région pour découvrir d’autres horizons tant que ça m’était permis, car sans dette hypothécaire ni enfant à garder en alternance. Je vis actuellement à Paris et en suis très heureux par ce que je découvre jour après jour tant humainement, culturellement aussi bien que professionnellement.

M’étant fait la réflexion aujourd’hui, je fais d’une pierre deux coups en disant que si j’avais à retourner en Suisse demain, j’essayerais de pointer mon nez chez eux. Liip, anciennement Bitflux, qui collaborent au projet Local.ch notamment. Ça reste la Suisse mais étant la région allémanique, je sûr que le dépaysement y est tout aussi grand qu’à l’étranger (sauf les Migros qui restent les mêmes).

J’avais avec Batiste eu un entretien chez les gars de Students et franchement je m’y voyais. Dynamique, jeune et intelligent, il y a une vraie effervescence dans la région zurichoise (et je ne mentionnerai que les webtuesday).

Ensuite d’autres essais en Espagne ou en Irelande sans succès. J’ai néanmoins passé 8 mois super funs à Lausanne chez Électron Libre, mais je ne pouvais renier mes envies premières : l’évasion.

Liip est à la recherche de talents, une occasion de changer d’air, de location, d’environnement. De Flash à JavaScript, en passant par XSLT (il y a des gourous de ce délicieux outils chez Liip) et pourquoi pas des stagiaires car il faut bien commencer par quelque part et il y a beaucoup à apprendre d’eux. 4 chances de pouvoir jouer à la Wii à la pause.

J’ai personnellement trouvé mon boulot actuel via un blog, et le précédant à cause d’un commentaire laissé lui aussi sur un blog. Comme quoi. En passant, ces entreprise là engagent également :

Yahoo! pour les passionnés du web,
et Électron Libre car la Suisse Allemande c’est vachement moins drôle qu’avec cette joyeuse bande là au bord du Léman.

On peut réorienter le cours de sa vie aussi simplement qu’en lisant ces blogs, ça a marché pour moi. Il faut juste se lancer, car en fin de compte on a rien à perdre mais au contraire tant à apprendre à se lancer.

Twitter Network Visualization

Microformats are cools (RDFa is promizing too)! They enable you to retrieve information from the HTML directly. When I saw a little demo of mofo applied to twitter I always imagine a tool to know what is my extended network from it. mofo is a very simple library for Ruby to extract microformats from a web page, simple and damn useful.

Extract a network at a given depth is pretty simple.

Take the page of the first person, level 0
Extract every buddies of him (hCard), level 1
For each of them do the first step.

This game isn’t very fun because people use to have many friends, not just 4 or 5, but from 10 to 100 (100 is the maximum of friends displayed on a page). So the network is big too quickly and at a depth of 2 you can have something like 2000 nodes easily if you choose someone who loves have his mobile phone spammed all the day long. You can enjoy, the pictures I’ve made from the pages of Batiste, Louiza and mine, every at a depth of 2 only. So the friends of your friends, this can be really big already.

The script I’ve made use some cool librairies you must have a look on them:

mofo, see above ;
rio, I/O made simple ;
hpricot, that is used by mofo by the way and gives you a very simple way to play with HTML.

It generate a .dot file for Graphviz from a big matrix of 0 and 1.

What’s the goal of this? The same conclusion than the last time. The depth of the network, if you want to reach 90% of the population isn’t big. Maybe 4 is enough starting from a 100 friends page. For example: 1’000’000 of person could be reach at a depth of 4 if the average of friends people have is about 31. 31 is not a lot and Twitter users aren’t that much, 35K according to this article.

The advise I can give is use microformats, maybe FOAF could be useful to but microformats doesn’t cost a lot too implement and could really be used by users via great tools like Operator.

Les microformats c’est bon mangez-en (une maxime toujours sympa à utiliser, ré-utiliser). Ils permettent d’extraire de l’information de manière assez générique dans une page sans avoir à se soucier de comment est formaté l’HTML (en matière de tags utilisés, de divisions imbriquées, …). Quand j’ai vu un exemple d’utilisation de mofo, une bibliothèque Ruby permettant d’extraire les microformats d’une page) avec une page Twitter, cette idée est née: visualiser mon réseau d’amis sur Twitter, voir mes amis, les amis de mes amis, etc.

Pour ce faire, il faut extraire ce réseau et le contruire, simple comme bonjour:

récupérer la page de la personne qu’on veut visualiser (niveau 0)
extraire tous ces amis, des hCard (niveau 1)
recommencer à l’étape 1 avec chacun de ceux-ci agrandir le réseau.

De prime abord ça semble cool et on s’imagine pouvoir explorer le monde en profondeur. En réalité les utilisateurs ont trop d’amis pour qu’il y ait une bonne profondeur. À une profondeur de 2 il est simple d’atteindre un réseau d’environ 2000 personnes. J’ai fait des images de réseau de trois personnes (Batiste, Louiza et moi-même) car ils sont sensiblement différents et on peut voir les différences de structures.

Ce script fait usage de bibliothèques très pratiques pour Ruby :

mofo, la boite-à-outils des microformats;
rio, rien de plus simple pour lire, enregistrer un fichier, une URL;
hpricot, utilisé par mofo d’ailleurs, elle permet de traiter l’HTML de manière super simplifié avec les sélecteurs CSS par exemple (ce qui a fait le succès de jQuery)

Et génère une belle matrice d’adjacence qu’il exprime ensuite en un fichier .dot pour Graphviz.

Le but de ceci est de se rendre compte dans un environnement réel que pour atteindre disons 90% des utilisateurs de Twitter une profondeur de 4 est certainement suffisante. On mentionne qu’il y aurait 35 mille utilisateurs. 33 amis par personne en moyenne et 3 niveaux de profondeurs suffisent pour atteindre 35’000 personnes.

En conseil, utilisez les microformats dans vos applications pour les bidouilleurs qui peuvent s’en amuser et les utilisateurs de l’extension firefox Operator pouvant ainsi ajouter de nouveaux contacts à leur agenda, de nouveaux évènements à leur calendrier.

This week in the subway I saw a girl watching her favorite TV Show on a Creative device (unfortunately for me it wasn’t “The Bold And The Beautiful”). It surprised me a lot. People are making phone calls, reading the newspaper, playing to the Sony PSP or the Nintendo DS, reading and answering SMS or emails from their mobile phone. Some of them just can’t sit down and travel, maybe some of them want to light a cigaret I don’t know.

What is surprising me is the omnipresence of the medias: mass media or much more personal ones like emails, sms or “tweets”. It’s a known fact (from my friends) that I don’t have any cellphones, watches (despite of my origins) or iPod-like mp3/video player. I only have got a camera in my pocket (it’s bad I know). Seeing this kind of behaviour like watching a tv show in the subway makes me asking myself. I remember the panel at Lift’07 about “Technological overload” and the question everybody asked himself after it: “Am I an addict?”. Ja oder Nein oder Jaein? Jaein!

Twitter offers now a mobile version, Google Reader a Wii friendly version, so I can eat contents from everywhere, how often I want and in lots of different ways. Cool no? Even if I don’t want to be part of it because I spend already too much time on a computer, I’m asking myself about what kind of tools will we see in the future used by the same people?

Maybe more Flickr and YouTube on handheld devices or Wii. If the “popular” content coming from del.icio.us, digg, reddit, slashdot I read daily (even before starting working) could be condensed in a virtual newspaper that I could read in the subway, will it improve my day? Maybe. I can even combine tools like Yahoo! pipes and rss2pdf and have a paper version of it. This way I’ll look like a student who’s learning before a test. With rss2mp3.py I could be able to listen to them. My head will not nod the same way as if I was listening to my favorite rock band, but it’s another way to eat content.

I think that the new web application are going to have multiple heads, much more multiples ways to interact with them than basically HTML and RSS like now. Wii users as well as mobile users will want the ability to use efficiently your web app in the future. Are the ability to tag, to geolocalise, to share part of these tools? I think if the girl in the subway can rate or tag the tv show she just watched she will (in a near future).

Everything we consume in a massive quantity like music, web articles, tv shows, movie clips require us to tag them to organise them because of the massive aspect. I want more and more to share. Twitter, Blogmarks, Last.fm and Flickr are for myself first because I decide what I put on them, but and the usage of them shows me that the social part of it get bigger and bigger of the time. My friends’ content or the popular one becomes more important that mine at last. The need to get contents everywhere, to get contents of quality is going more and more important for everyone I guess.

Becoming mobile, taggable, shareable is a challenge for the current web application and the upcoming ones.

Cette semaine mon attention a été capté par une dame regardant une série TV dans le métro sur un appareil Creative. Je côtoie ceux qui écrivent et lisent des SMS, jouent à la PSP de Sony ou la DS de Nintendo, lisent leurs emails, écoute de la musique (souvent de manière dérangeante car trop fort). Les traditionnels livres et journaux sont plus rares bien que toujours présents. Au fond, il n’y a pas trop de différence son comportement à elle et celui des autres usagers qui occupent leur temps d’une manière ou d’une autre mais ça m’a interloqué.

Les médias sont partout et sous toutes les formes, du média de masse: tv, radio, journaux au de plus en plus couru un média plus personnel allant de l’e-mail au tweet. Ils mutent également pour s’adapter aux nouveaux outils comme Twitter avec sa version mobile ou Google Reader s’adaptant à la Wii. Je peux consommer du contenu à toutes les sauces du matin au soir. Et pourquoi pas imprimer un condensé des flux que j’ai l’habitude de consulter le matin via Yahoo! Pipes et rss2pdf voire le mettre sur mon baladeur après en avoir fait un fichier mp3.

Tout ceci m’interroge sur le nouveau visage ou plutôt les nouvelles interfaces, manière d’interagir avec les applications web actuelles ou futures. Un YouTube sur le iPod Vidéo qui offrirait des fonctionnalités de tagging, vote et partage des vidéos visionnées. Pourquoi pas? L’augmentation de notre consommation de données musicales, vidéos, textuelles, graphiques ont forcé ou amené le comportement actuel de je taggue, je partage, je note, je diggue. Si mes divers comptes dans ces services là ont leur utilité pour le contenu que j’y mets, il en a une encore plus grande pour le contenu de mon réseau d’amis in fine.

Même si ma réalité ne compte ni téléphone mobile, ni montre, ni lecteur mp3 d’aucune sorte car j’aime quand je fais ma sieste dans l’herbe savoir que la seule chose qui puisse me déranger serait une météorite, je m’interroge sur quel sera le prochain comportement que je pourrai observer dans le métro un prochain matin.

Le challenge du web de maintenant et à venir est de devenir partageable, taggable et mobile (et/ou wii compatible). Je me réjouis de la suite.

Babel (2006)

★★★★★ Three places, four cultures and a rifle that leads the whole story. The story of an illegally immigrant woman in San Diego who’s taking care of two children from an american couple. They are in vacation in Morocco where the wife get shoot accidentally by a kid who’s got his rifle from a guy who guide a japanese hunter years ago. You meet them in their places, their reality as well as country.

One leitmotiv is love, the daughter of the japanese guy is definitively looking for it. She fighting around her to get some love, to try to leave the feeling she has to be different, a girl, event a monster. The american couple has trouble with their mutual love because he’s fleeing and the aim of this trip in Morocco is to take the time to think about it and, if possible, get it back. The drama that occurs because of a kid’s play will it change something? The mexican girl who lives now for the couple’s children has left his family in Mexico and the little trip to attend his son’s wedding will change her life a way she cannot imagine.

We’re all looking for a piece of love, a piece of true love in our daily reality. Sometimes we want to cross oceans, seas to find it. Are we right? I don’t know, I just crossed and see nothing here. It remainds me this famous book I read years ago that can learns you lots of things and not what you expect, like the life day after day.

So in this movie I saw that what’s really important for all of us is near us and we sometimes just have to fold the knees to take it. The truth in every of our action cannot lead us to more trouble that lying already do.

Trois histoires autour d’un fusil

Babel (2006)

★★★★★ Trois places, quatres cultures et une histoire, celle d’un fusil donné par un chasseur japonais à un berger marocain. Cet arme va entrer dans la vie d’un couple américain en vacances dans l’Atlas pour tenter de se retrouver alors que leurs enfants partent à l’aventure emmené par leur bonne assister au mariage de son fils. Le fusil tombe dans les mains de deux garçons qui vont blesser la femme l’atteignant en pleine clavicule. Dans l’inconnu le plus complet le mari va se battre, se perdre, donner toute son énegie pour lui sauver la vie.

L’amour m’a semblé être au coeur de ce film, celui du patriarche marocain, de la bonne qui vit pour ces deux enfants depuis qu’ils sont nés et va tout faire pour vivre l’union de son fils. Cet amour oublié, perdu de ce mari qu’ils sont venus tenter de retrouver dans ce désert inhospitalié. Et cette fille japonaise qui danse dans son univers avec pour unique but de trouver l’homme lui permettant de quitter ce qu’elle est et qui lui pèse. Elle vit le refus d’être une jeune fille, une handicapée, ne pas trouver cette amour, peut-être paternel au fond.

Le tout est servi par une bande sonore délicieuse qui permet de se plonger dans les univers de chacun, d’être pénétré par leurs émotions et d’en ressortir imprimé par leur histoire conté tout simplement.

Sommes-nous tous à la recherche de ces bouts d’amour, d’amour véritable. Ne sommes-nous pas prêt à traverser les océans et les mers dans l’espoir d’y arriver ? Ces morceaux d’étoiles que nous regardons dans le ciel ne sont-ils pas les mêmes qui jonchent le sol et pour lesquels il nous suffirait de se baisser pour en profiter ? N’est-ce pas le voyage qui nous permet de découvrir de trésor car celui que nous possédons déjà nous est invisible peut-être. Je reviens un peu en arrière sur un livre célèbre.

J’ai vu au travers de ce film que nous possèdons notre bonheur, comme s’il suffisait de lui tendre la main, de s’écouter. Quitter cette vérité est s’emmener dans un monde où chaque faux pas fait écho nous faisant perdre le nord petit à petit.
